a while back, i wrote here about our pal michael tortorello's ongoing series of articles in the new york times about the vegetable garden he's growing in the lot next to his house in urban northeast minneapolis. it's his first attempt at something like this so it's appropriately called, "the starter garden".
we are kinda the stars of last week's column and since michael is a way better writer than i am, i encourage you to go there and read his version of the story.

except for the one below, which is my obligatory, admittedly terrible self-portait... michaels neighbor, actor/performance artist jon ferguson took these pics with various vintage cameras from his impressive collection.

as a long time fan of internet language translations, this instantly became my favorite post of the week. my old pal dan monick on the french blog street tease. classic...
Completely Californian, between the hippism rock' roll and the vipism of second zone, daN Monick is a photographer who returns in my signal ten, me follower of odd, tinted photographs pola and full people with the torn off mouths. The bearded one started with shooter there is a good number of years, after having turned through the US ones like beater of groups to the reduction. Today, he juggles between shots for magazines like Vice, Swindle, Rolling Stone, Arkitip or Paper, and is made obviously requester by marks like Nike or Stussy.
dan's post about it on his blog, duck boots, is here. man, i hope he does use this translation as his new bio and, i sure hope you take a moment to check out his work.
i also have to go public and admit to a certain amount of beard envy here. wow.

catholic architecture + communist architecture

first, robert wyatt sings a gentle, wandering song called 'catholic architecture' on french tv in 1990. meanwhile, across town perhaps (?) sits this Oscar Niemeyer designed building that serves as the headquarters for the french communist party.
photo via purple diary

oscar niemeyer has long been one of my favorite people ever. his work, his story, his age (101), his approach etc. and i've written of this before but, i want to write about it again. when asked recently about his process as an architect he said:
"i pick up a pen... a building appears."
it reminds me of another figure who's never far from that place in me... arvo part (mp3). oscar's pen quote brings to mind this from arvo: when asked what he thought of schubert, arvo was quiet for a while, then he took a pen from his pocket, set it on the table and said "schubert's pen is like my pen, half ink, half tears." wow.

and then finally, there's this. it's a sample of the song 'perfect communist' by the suburbs from the web site of their old label. i'd have shared the whole mp3 if i still had it but, i threw the album out a few years back because one of the band members treated a good friend kinda poorly in a break-up. i was mad and decided to toss all the music he was involved with that i owned. actually, he's probably a fine person now and it's really a great song and...
it really kinda illustrates how many light years away i am from a guy whose pen is 'half ink and half tears' doesn't it? man, i gotta get to work.

vincent gallo's pants

Thursday, 21 May 09 - 12:01 AM (GMT -06:00) By ro / lu in misc / music |

gosh, i know some people who hate vincent gallo. not me. i understand their concern i guess but, i've enjoyed almost everything he's ever done. his music, his films, his modeling in purple magazine... i mean, who gets their career started in a hip hop project with basquiat? so until he does something really lame, i'm in, i'm down.
i went to see his new musical project rriiccee last fall and a couple of my friends thought it was totally lame. i loved it.
so it is with an amused curiosity that i see the artist kime buzzelli is selling a pair of pants he gave her for house sitting. on ebay here.

i should add too that the reason she's selling them is to raise money for a new huge studio space so, if you're interested... there's a 'support a great artist' element to this rare and somewhat odd opportunity.
and while we're on the topic of kime buzzelli... her blog the moldy doily is one of about 30 that i've been reading consistently for a few years now. totally addicted. i highly recomend both her work and her blog. my wife's a huge fan too.
and i guess since we're on the topic of vincent gallo too...

now i'm a fan but, probably, i'll pass on the pants. the night rriiccee played here though gallo's outfit was awesome. large boxy cut boat neck half zip turquiose leather shirt, carhart work pants in the kinda pumpkin/tan shade and vintage gucci ankle boots. and he reeked. the man had not bathed. but it worked for him. totally cool.
and man, i'd sure love to know which john lautner house he lives in. it brings to mind this project he was working with rem koolhaas on. i wonder whatever became of it?
anyways, what a great story. huh?
please enjoy the time while it passes and the pants if you win them.

drilling and boring

|
Monday, 18 May 09 - 01:33 PM (GMT -06:00) By ro / lu in misc / music |

came across this work by david bunn called 'book worms' in a back issue (#16 - i wait, i wait) of open city, which is a super cool non profit magazine and book project that has published work by friends of mine. btw - their spring benefit is coming up in a few days and if you can't attend you should send them money anyways. ok?

part of the reason i bought the back issue was for a photo of robert bingham that is in it. i am a big fan. he was a huge part of open city too for many years until he sadly died in 1999.

here's how this post came to life...
so when i saw this work this morning the words "drilling and boring" initially struck because i thought "yeah, tell me about it." as i am really sick and they just seemed like applicable words.
then i looked up david bunn the artist and really like some of his work.
then i was reminded of the words "narrow and intense". there was something similar i thought, with "drilling and boring". "narrow and intense" was how donald judd described the blue paintings by yves klein in judd's essay "specific objects". it's a description that me and my friend david like to haul out frequently.
then i remembered this stationary by george maciunas and thought about how much i like typewriters and about how much i want a cursive typewriter.
then i remembered i'd always wanted to return to this work that was i think done largely by noa segal for the walker art center show text/messages.
and since i'm laying around feeling sorry for myself, sick... i thought i'd make a werd serch mix. not too much with drilling or boring so i took some liberties...
- drilling profitability - the dirty projectors
- some drilling implied - guided by voices
- being boring - pet shop boys
- let's get boring - chris herbert
- drill - wire
- boredom is a product - the dirty projectors
- bored to death - government issue
- i'm so bored with the u.s.a. - the clash
- i am bored - the microphones
- on board - friendly fires
- happy cycling - boards of canada
- olson - boards of canada
a pretty good mix. please enjoy it here and print this for a cover if you burn a cd...

ok?
really though, i've always loved library card catalog systems and old skool organization methods. what could be more beautiful than this?

probably about half the cool things i've learned about in the last few years, especially music related stuff, is traceable back to my pal jessica hopper. perfect taste... always, with a smart, accurate and intellectually provocative assessment of the topic at hand (and funny!). if you are not following along with her, i'd recommend getting started. the above album, this is happening without your permission, from teenage teardrops might be a good start. did she curate this album? i don't even remember now. i know she did the art and part of the liner notes and there aren't many copies left so...

and her new book is available for preorder at amazon. this is the kind of thing that makes me hope i have a daughter someday. here's more at jessica's blog (also at left). i mean cmon right?
it's kinda odd to me that i haven't actually seen her in person in something like 15 years and with the exception of blogs and emails and facebook, the last in real life memories i have of her, she was literally the coolest 16 year old grrl who ever lived and she'd hang around northern lights record store in downtown minneapolis where i worked in the early and mid 90s...
so in a way, i guess it's not really that surprising that a few years back she turned me onto stuff like the super early abe vigoda 7 inches etc (thanks for all that jessica)...
and i guess in a way it won't really surprise me at all if she becomes the next susan sontag or something over the coming years either.
please enjoy the time as it passes.

maurice shelton
so busy that i thought i'd take the easy way out again today (yesterday too) and sing the praises of a blog i love. you have been here sometime is fantastic and has really been on a roll.
and like the blog tell you (today) from yesterdays post, recently, arthur russell has been coming up in posts.
i love arthur russell too. visit both those sites... they've been added to the left.
btw - the light related work posted here would work well with the song of the day here.
but now that i'm onto this...
in the arthur russell documentary wild combination, there is a scene towards the end where arthur's partner tom is talking about all the unreleased songs and compositions that exist and this song comes on and tom gets the most earnest, beautiful smile on his face and says "i love this one!". it's a moment i'll always cherish...
love is overtaking me - arthur russell
my friends and i have all talked about how much we love tom lee and my friend jeff who's a writer with all the writerly-esque connections and i have discussed trying to get in touch with him. it is rare to encounter a human that creates that reaction and it seems like an instinct we should trust.
please, enjoy the time while it passes.

this is one of the proposed splash pages you'll land at on the new rolu / rosenlof/lucas web site that should be up in a few weeks. we are totally psyched. it's being designed by walker art center design fellow mylinh trieu nguyen. she's awesome.
here's a few more sneak peeks at some of the concepts.

we absolutely love her work and are also really excited about a rolu / asdf project. asdf is mylinh's collaborative work with artist david horvitz. wow huh.
we've also just started moving into our new studio. super fun. grabbed a white couchoid from blu dot and a bunch of ikea stuff. new computers etc.

next we're buying some knoll pollock chairs...

hanging some art and bringing in all the books, magazines and zines for the library. we'll have to have an opening party sometime in the next couple months and you can all come and hang out with us.
so much to look forward to. stay tuned...
and please enjoy yourself.

so busy that i barely have time for a post... but, busy is a good problem to have.
cue up this fitting song the workplace by jim o'rourke and see my last two days.
first we went to meet with a new client we're super psyched to be working with...

one of the coolest people ever. funny, friendly... and, we're huge fans of her work.

her dogs are amazing. lennon and lola.

then we traveled past this project from last year. looking great...

really good in fact. they were great clients. you know? we've never had a bad client.

see mike in the background? wherever we go... he starts weeding. second nature.

we went all over the city checking on work. we really get attached to our projects.

stopped by here to make sure all the plants are back and the steel is rusting right.

everywhere we went, the work was looking good. we felt great about it.

then it rained and we were blessed with this cool sight.

then when the sun went down... wow.

'gratitude is heaven' - william blake

i don't look up at the sky much at night. makes me want to do this, only at night.

then we woke up and went to this amazing new client's project.

they are charming and brilliant people. (here, see for yourself) we are honored.

a woodpecker damaged some of these gorgeous wood panels. he's gone away now.

then we went to blu dot and bought a giant white couchoid. awesome.
definitely get one of their catalogs... they're done by these two brilliant dudes.

this is sarah ra ra of this. she's holding a tiny vices print that's going in our studio.

this guy is the super cool person who scored it for me. thanks again cali.
and for what it's worth? the tone of this post was completely stolen from his blog...
i've been completely addicted to it for years. it works if you work it.
please enjoy the time while it passes you by. ok?

the colors and the kids

everythings been coming up colors and kids the last few days.
a few years ago my friends, the artists david hamlow and liz miller, got mfa's, took jobs teaching art at a college in the country and bought an old farmhouse. i don't see them nearly enough anymore but they are having a pretty good time. the small town where they live is appropriately called good thunder. the small school there doesn't have the budget for a full scale art program so they hired david to come and do a week of art teaching.

the students saved their non recyclable waste for a while and then made them into long tubes. david then taught them about geodesic domes and the grand finale of his teachings was this... they built a geodesic dome in the schools gymnasium. david invited me along to watch. super cool. (here's some more pics of my field trip here.)
all the kids agreed that it was the "best class ever... easily!"

then, over thee weekend as i shared here, l.a.'s lucky dragons made us all feel like kids at the walker art center. our friend mylinh trieu nguyen took some pictures...

here's sarah ra ra surrounded by joy!
then one of our favorite clients from last year sent these pics along of his family enjoying the work we installed. it feels awesome to see our work being enjoyed!

and come to think of it... what could be better than springtime in minneapolis, colors and kids? tonight we have a meeting about our new web site and look with mylinh... its getting very close and very cool!
please enjoy the color and the kids by cat power...
and the time as it passes by.

my old pal dan monick made this for the 2009 fall collection of valerj pobega. it's definitely pretty badass cool.
on a random semi-related note, i sang the backing vocals on a song for dan's old band lifter puller ... the lyrics i sang? stolen from guns n' roses.
i highly suggest you check out dan's website and work. he recently collaborated with the great mike mills on a beautiful album cover for this live record by the sads ... i'm currently saving up money to buy the print. (yes!)
